Public sector digital: what does the future hold?

This morning I gave the keynote address at a conference on digital and the Scottish public sector. The gist of my talk was this: digital - and the web in particular - is changing our world and our lives in more ways than we can count, and faster than most of us ever expected. In the process it's opening up huge potential for the public sector to deliver better outcomes for citizens and communities (by putting user needs first), and exciting new opportunities for collaboration with organisations beyond the traditional edge of the state. But getting there won't be a cakewalk. We need ambitious leaders across the public sector who are prepared to upend the status quo, and together we must make real progress on digital participation so that no one is left behind. If you fancy a longer read, the slides are here: Public Sector Digital: What does the future hold? Later in the day we had a good discussion about how local government is embracing digital (or not), and it left me pondering the parallels for charities and voluntary organisations taking their first steps online. More on that in the next post.
