Job Title: General Assistant

Job Outline

To work as part of a team to assist with the collecting, delivery, sorting, display and sale of donated goods for the Salvation Army Furniture Project. To assist, under supervision, with the marketing of the project through social media. To work within health &safety regulations and organisation policies.

Job Title: General Assistant

Line Manager: Workshop Supervisor

Responsible to: Service Manager of Lifehouse

1. Overall purpose of the role

To work as part of a team of staff and volunteers to assist in the general operation of the Salvation Army Furniture Project, including being a member of the van team when required. To be involved in the promotion of the project to the general public using social media and other marketing strategies.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

According to individual capability and training provision, any of the following duties and responsibilities will be required.

You may be expected to assist with the following:

Warehouse Duties

• Preparation of furniture and other goods within the warehouse;

• Moving items around the warehouse to ensure that maximum use is made of the storage area;

• Keeping items in a clean and presentable condition;

• Maintaining displayed goods to a high standard;

• Appropriately pricing and tagging items;

• When required, the arrangement of collections and deliveries face to face or on the telephone with the public;

• When required, serving customers as appropriate;

• Keeping the warehouse clean and presentable at all times;

• Completing relevant paperwork to ensure it is correct and filed in accordance with the procedures.

Van Duties

• Being a member of the van team;

• Being aware of the van operations e.g. tail lift, roller shutter door etc. and operating same following suitable training;

• Uplift of furniture and other goods;

• Delivery of purchased items of furniture and other goods;

• Awareness of being a representative of the Salvation Army when removing furniture etc. from the homes of those donating;

• Completing relevant paperwork to ensure it is correct and filed in accordance with the procedures.

3. General

• Regular communication with the Workshop Supervisor and the team;

• Attending training relevant to the post as required;

• Participation in other volunteering activities e.g. painting; upcycling; furniture restoration etc;

• When required and following appropriate training marketing the project with the use of social media;

• Assisting with any other matters as directed by the Workshop Supervisor;

• Promoting the aims of the Salvation Army.

4. Other tasks

• Training will be provided according to individual capacity;

• To have knowledge of, and comply with, all regulations regarding the Salvation Army’s Health and Safety Policy;

• To give due attention to any defects or maintenance issues including any potential hazards to customers and staff, notifying the Workshop Supervisor as necessary;

• To have adequate knowledge about the Salvation Army so that the customer and staff queries can be answered;

• To fulfil any additional duties as mutually agreed between him/her and the Workshop Supervisor.
