Aims & objectives

Birchwood Highland was established over 25 years ago as a charity working with people with mental ill-health. Through our mission statement we aim to increase a person’s capacity to live independently and feel part of the community, thus reducing feelings of isolation. We support people to build self-confidence and adopt lifestyles that improve their health and well-being. We operate in the Inverness, Easter Ross and Lochaber areas.

Job description

Birchwood Highland is a nonprofit, person centered organization which support people with severe and enduring mental ill-health with recovery. Our recently established charity shop aims to provide a social enterprise to Invergordon and the wider Easter Ross area. The charity shop assistant should have a good working knowledge of the support Birchwood Highland provides and uphold the philosophy of the organization. There are a number of duties which the shop assistant will undertake such as;

• To assist with processing stock, including sorting, steaming, pricing and hanging of the donated items.

• To help ensure the shop premises are clean and tidy at all times and that stock is replenished as other stock is sold.

• To assist the shop manager in ensuring that all administrative and financial procedures are followed, including banking, cash register reconciliation, reports and volunteer records.

• To open and close the shop as required when the Rota requires.

• To work with others in the shop in a supporting and helpful manner, assisting with the support and raining of new shop volunteers including people that are supported by Birchwood Highland.

• To promote public understanding of the work Birchwood Highland delivers and the importance of raising funds through the shop.

• To participate and support any other fundraising activities or events that are planned to take place at the shop or as part of the work of the shop.

The shop assistant will be expected to undertake any other duties as appropriate within their competency level and general level of responsibility. This role outline is not exhaustive and may need to be amended in the light of changing circumstances and after discussion with the shop assistant.

• Previous experiences in retail desired but not essential.

• Confident in handling cash and using a card machine.

• Ability to work on their own initiative

• Good interpersonal skill and ability to talk to customers who need support.

• Willingness to support new volunteers

• An understanding of the support Birchwood Highland provides

• Ability and confidence to work on their own without supervision.

• Ability to take on more responsibility as and when required in relation to the job role.

• Flexibility in their approach to general day-to-day duties.

Support

The successful candidate will be provided with an exhaustive induction package which will highlight Birchwood Highland’s policies and operation procedures, as well as areas for additional support. Birchwood Highland prides itself in its approach to continued professional development and all staff are required to keep their training up to date and pinpoint areas which they wish to further develop.

Birchwood Highland offers an extensive training package to all of its member of staff and as such, the successful candidate will be expected to attend training where required. As well as highlight additional areas they wish to improve upon to their manager.

Supervision occurs every four to six weeks and will give the candidate a supportive environment with the time to reflect and highlight areas they feel have gone well. It will also be a time to pinpoint any difficulties they have faced; however, these can also be raised outside of supervision.
