Happy New Year! And looking back, it was a busy old year in the SCVO Information Service.

First off, I’d like to start by thanking everyone who contacted the SCVO Information Service last year. During 2018 we received more than 1,400 enquiries on all manner of subjects, ranging from how to set up a charity to dealing with GDPR, from safeguarding to the new Scottish Governance Code. As well as these hot topics, another hardy perennial was employment law and taking on staff for the first time.

Employment query topics included such issues as recruitment and induction, contracts, and pay and pensions. It can be daunting for any board of trustees when they reach the point where they need to take on their first member of staff, but aren’t sure where to start. The transition from volunteer to employer can be difficult, and expensive, if not handled the right way. So with this in mind we’ve updated our website with a ten point checklist you can use when starting out.

The checklist goes right from making sure you’re ready to take on staff, through recruitment and induction, to the checks you have to make on prospective employees. It looks at contracts and insurance, and also gives some pointers on pensions and pay. It’s not an exhaustive list, but we hope it will set you on your way to becoming a great employer. If you have any queries on employing staff, do let us know, and remember we have the free legal advice service for SCVO members if you’ve got any employment law issues you need help with.

Also, we’re always looking to improve the information we offer on our website and welcome any suggestions for gaps that you think need to be filled.
