Supporting Scotland's vibrant voluntary sector

Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations is the membership organisation for Scotland's charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises. Charity registered in Scotland SC003558. Registered office Mansfield Traquair Centre, 15 Mansfield Place, Edinburgh EH3 6BB.

Outsourcing payroll services can make a big difference for charities and community groups. It’s cost-effective, helps alleviate the pressure on existing resources and enables organisations to focus their energy and resources on their key business functions and aims.

The SCVO Payroll Service has been supporting Scotland’s voluntary sector by providing a flexible, reliable and cost-effective payroll solution since 1994. Our experienced payroll team processes salaries for over 430 organisations across the country – with over 7,000 payslips going out each month – and is inspected every four years to maintain their status as a Bacs approved bureau.

We provide a variety of services – from management reporting and pension assessment reports to HMRC payments and secure online payslips – along with employer support on payroll legislation and procedures.

What we do

Payment of statutory payments – sick pay/statutory maternity pay/statutory adoption/shared parental leave calculated as per HMRC legislation.

GDPR compliant encrypted management reports – full management reports are sent to clients via Quatrix encryption software, a secure file sharing solution that meets GDPR legislation and is UK Government approved.

Management reporting – management reports can be cost split between different departments or areas, and bespoke reports can be written for your individual requirements.

Secure online payslips – electronic payslips are provided via a secure online portal where employees can access current and previous payslips.

Year end process – P60’s are provided to all current employees at the end of the tax year and year end information is reported to HMRC through real-time information (RTI). These are also uploaded to employee online portals if they are using the electronic payment system.

Real time information (RTI) submissions – full payment submissions (FPS) and employers payment submission (EPS) are reported to HMRC within the specified deadlines, and end of year requirements are reported in RTI.

Workplace pension & auto-enrolment – we have vast experience of many pension schemes including salary sacrifice schemes for pensions, final salary schemes and auto-enrolment. We provide assessment reports each month to establish qualifying employees to be enrolled into the workplace pension scheme, and an upload report is available for most pension providers. We don’t currently upload these directly to pension providers but there are plans to implement this in the future.

BACSTEL-IP payment system – SCVO can pay employees directly into their bank accounts from their employers’ bank account if we are set up as an indirect submitter with the organisation’s bank account, which provides the facility to pay employees directly on their specified paydate. Our team would then provide a bacs payment list along with management reports for authorisation before submitting.

HMRC payments – SCVO can facilitate the payment to HMRC for PAYE and NIC using Bacstel-IP.

Helpline – we provide employer support for payroll related queries.

Testimonials

I have worked with Children in Scotland for 18 years and during this time the SCVO payroll team has supported our payroll process and helped to ensure that our staff are paid appropriately each month. The personal – as well as professional – approach by the team is welcomed and their unending patience in dealing with challenges as they arise is very much appreciated. Thank you!

Cathie MacDonald, Children in Scotland

SCVO has been providing FAIR Limited with payroll services for most of the 25 years they have been undertaking this work. This has relieved us of a burden which saves us considerable time and helps us to concentrate on our work of providing an advice service for people with learning disabilities in Edinburgh and beyond. Payroll reports and payslips are always delivered on time and very rarely have we had to query them. When we do it’s usually our mistake! We hope we can rely on their excellent service for many years to come.
