Our Digital Champion work!
We’ve created hundreds of Digital Champions across Scotland’s voluntary sector who are making a real difference, helping to tackle social exclusion by supporting people in our communities to develop essential digital skills.
We’ve provided Digital Champion training to a range of organisations who have gone on to support their service users, including:
Through Digital Champion led group activities, Camphill Blair Drummond have increased the confidence, self-esteem and digital skills of their service users.
“I’ve been learning new things to do on the computer….I feel good helping other students and residents.” – Camphill BD service user supported by one of their Digital Champions
“It’s been a godsend to help me try and learn the basics…Everyone I work with needs this to apply for benefits, so I need to try and keep up with them. My son stays in Australia and it’s great to be able to keep in touch.” – Jean, a LEAP service user supported by their Digital Champion

Our embedded approach
We know that the people most likely to be facing barriers to digital inclusion are older, poorer and facing other forms of disadvantage. These are very often the service users of organisations and groups across the voluntary sector in Scotland who they have established and trusted relationships with.
That’s why the voluntary sector is well placed to help their service users to improve their essential digital skills by embedding Digital Champion support into their front-line support services, building on this existing valued relationship to have even more impact.
Whether it’s helping someone to create a CV so they can apply for a job online or to navigate online banking so they can manage their money better; to helping them set up and use Skype to keep in touch with family so they feel less isolated to ordering their prescriptions online to help manage their health conditions. Small actions over a long-term period can make a huge difference to a person’s essential digital skills level and in turn their life.
This video from Eilidh Little, Digital Development Officer with SCVO gives more detail of what an embedded digital champion model is and what approach SCVO has taken to date for training up Digital Champions across the voluntary sector.
SCVO have been part of the UK wide One Digital partnership, an exciting and unique Big Lottery funded collaborative digital inclusion programme.
At the heart of One Digital is the recruitment and training of Digital Champions to deliver essential digital skills support to individuals who are digitally excluded. For further information on the programme please take a look at the One Digital website.
