Re-Union is a community barge based on the Union Canal, Edinburgh. We help community organisations access the water of the canal for the benefit of people in canal linked communities

Job description

Work closely with the Business Manager fulfilling all identified and designated duties participating in regular planning meetings and reviews.

Support a range of volunteers to daily targets fulfilling paperwork as directed.

Participate in all office functions including customer engagement.

Ensure that all Health & Safety requirements are complied with, along with Re-Union’s equal opportunities, child and vulnerable adults, environmental and educational policies

Be an active community ambassador.

Maintain all operational resources to safe, clean and working standard.

Ensure a clean, safe and healthy environment within all operational areas.


Completion of maintenance tasks as directed.

Support an environment based on peer support and mentoring, enabling volunteers and staff to work together to develop their skills creating a cyclical process where volunteers achieve a qualification and move onto mentoring other volunteers through the qualification process.

Support the learning opportunities available within Re-Union through a complimentary programme of learning about the canal’s history, geography, wildlife, biodiversity, carbon literacy, cycling, walk leading, recycling and any other activity related to the project.

Identify development needs of volunteers and work with the Management Team to meet daily needs.

Any other reasonable duties required for the effective delivery of Re-Union’s social and community and business objectives.

Duties will include:

Boat cleaning


Low level DIY and maintenance (supported)

Answering the phone to customers

Processing bookings for boat trips

Learning to crew

Meeting and greeting boat hire customers

General office admin such as printing


Populating databases

buying supplies to support boat trips.

Person specification

It is essential to be comfortable working outdoors in all weathers, have the ability to complete practical tasks following set procedures and be a good communicator able to follow and set instructions setting an example for others. It is essential to be comfortable communicating with others including customers using a range of mediums.
